Open Source Software and Free Data
All the software and analysis generated by MIG is open source. You can look at it, copy it, and change it. However, if it has a copyright (e.g. code) the copyright is retained by its rightful owner.
Why do we do this?
We have lots of data. Really lots. So if you want some data, we probably have something that will help. We have more data than we can handle, so it is here. We also have lots of collaborators, and they want to see their analysis. It is here too.
We are publicly funded researchers doing basic science research. The public pays for this analysis, and they have the right to see the analysis
You can steal our data. Except that it is not stealing, since we're letting you do it.
Please analyze it. Tell us things that we have missed, got wrong, or got right, and we will credit you for them. We're always looking for people to help with the analysis, so do enough of this, and maybe we'll hire you!. Do something fun, interesting, or challenging, and we'll help you get it published somewhere.
Just don't be stupid. Don't publish the data as your own. Ask us, and we'll almost certainly let you publish anything you like, or add you as authors on papers that we are writing at the moment.
It's free and it's there to be used. Just not abused!
Don't be a dick1, don't do evil2. Enjoy and have fun!
